Dillingham committees to meet
The Finance Committee meets at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Council Chambers.
The following committees will meet, but the time and day have not been announced: The Code Committee, Library Advisory Board and Port of Dillingham Advisory Committee.

UAF campus happenings
Spring semester at the Bristol Bay Campus has begun. The campus is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The university has weekend classes this term including a one-credit class in Keyboarding: Document Formatting which runs Jan. 30-Feb. 1.
Classes next month include Introduction to Traditional Crafts: Carving, which will be held on Feb. 5-7 and Birds of Alaska: Migratory Birds of Southwest Alaska beginning on Feb. 13.
People interested in taking any of these classes are asked to call. For a list of upcoming classes, please stop by the campus or visit our Web site uaf.edu/bbc.
An Alaska Native Marketplace will be held at the Bristol Bay Campus from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24. All are invited to shop for Native crafts.

Committee members sought
The Dillingham Library Advisory Board has one three-year term seat open, and the Port of Dillingham Advisory Committee has seven seats open with varying terms from one to three year terms.
Individuals interested in sitting on a board or commission can submit a letter of interest to Mayor Alice Ruby, City of Dillingham, P.O. Box 889, Dillingham 99576. The deadline is Jan. 28.
Economic summit upcoming
The Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference is hosting its annual economic summit and membership meeting at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, Jan. 28-30. The meeting focuses on fishing, transportation, energy, funding and other economic issues important to Southwest Alaska. The membership business meeting takes place on the Jan. 30. Tune in for fish-business course
Alaska commercial fishermen can become business savvy without ever leaving home.
A new 11-week course called the Business of Fish is being offered by the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program and will be available on television and on the Web.
The class, which started Jan. 20, will be broadcast through the University of Alaska Television Network. Most Alaskans can view UATV programming through their local cable network. The course is also offered online and in person in Juneau. Workshops may be taken during actual workshop times or later in recorded versions at the student’s own convenience. There is no charge for the class but registration is required.
The course will cover the basics of business financial management, as well as topics such as direct marketing, starting seafood cooperatives, transferring a fishing license and other topics.
The class is part of the spring 2009 FishBiz Workshop Series, a University of Alaska distance delivery business management course targeting the Alaska seafood sector.
The course schedule is as follows:
Jan. 27 — Determining Fishing Profits and Valuing Investments; Feb. 3 — Is Direct Marketing Right For You?; Feb. 10 — Starting a Seafood Cooperative; Feb. 17 — Seafood Markets: Alaska’s Place in the Big Picture; March 3 — Transferring Your Fishing Business; March 24 — Lowering Your Fishing Fuel Bill; March 31 — Tapping into RSDAs; April 7 — Tracking Shellfish Farm Profits and Production; April 14 — Risk Management for a Fishing Operation; and April 28 — Alternative Fishing Technologies
The FishBiz workshops run from noon to 1:50 p.m. most Tuesdays through April 28. Previously aired workshops are available anytime over the Internet at the online class site.

BBEDC to help find summer staff
The Bristol Bay Economic Development Corp. is again offering both a seasonal employment opportunities program and the youth internship program.
For businesses that provide temporary employment to residents, the BBEDC will reimburse the business for the position at the completion of the employment.
The youth internships are designed for ages 14 to 17 in order to give youth a learning work experience.
BBEDC is requesting businesses that may wish to hire a seasonal employee or a youth intern during the summer to let them know. It will be traveling to campuses around the state from February through April and can advertise open positions.
Proposals for seasonal employees are due by 5 p.m. Jan. 31; youth internship requests deadline is 5 p.m. March 15.
