Henning, Simmonds lead Raiders to 5th in Palmer

Blaine Henning and Henry Simmonds both legged out top-25 performances on Saturday and led the Unalaska High School boys to fifth in the Division II standings at the 2017 Palmer Invitational Meet. Overall, the Raiders had all five runners finish in the top 55 in a 5-kilometer race that featured 90 runners.

Unalaska finished the meet with 162 points and tied Monroe Catholic in the team standings. Anchorage Christian won the boys' team crown with 31 points. Grace Christian, Bethel and Glennallen rounded out the top four.

Henning paced Unalaska's strong performance by racing his way to a team-best 18th -place. He finished the race with a time of 18 minutes, 10.07 seconds.

Simmonds sprinted across the finish line just over 18 seconds later to claim 24th overall. He finished the 3.1-mile race with a time of 18:28.41.

Talon Shaishnikoff, Chris Garcia and Bruce Tan also turned in strong outings for the Raiders. The three finished in a tight pack about a minute after Henning and Simmonds. Shaishnikoff checked in at No. 46 with an elapsed time of 19:26.18. Garcia and Tan placed 53rd and 54th, respectively, with times of 19:45.20 and 19:45.63.

The Raiders weren't the only Southwestern runners in the meet. Dillingham's Cole Dull turned in the top performance by an area runner by placing 16th in the boys' standings.

Dull finished the race with a time of 18:04.88. Dillingham teammate Zach Tilden was 83rd at 23:52.75.
