Calista Corp. and First Alaskans Institute announced today the transfer of ownership of First Alaskans Magazine to FAI.
First Alaskans Magazine was the flagship publication of Alaska Newspapers Inc. since it was first published in 2001. It has become known as the definitive magazine about Alaska Native organizations, tradition and political affairs. At the April 2011 Alaska Press Club awards banquet, First Alaskans Magazine earned first place for best magazine cover, first and second place for best magazine feature and first place for best magazine overall design.
Denise R. Morris, president and chief executive officer of FAI, said the institute is "excited to pursue this new opportunity and believe it is in natural alignment with our mission to advance Alaska Native people and communities through community engagement, information and research, collaboration and leadership development.
"First Alaskans Institute and Denise Morris are incredible leaders in the Alaska Native community," said Margaret Nelson, senior vice president of Calista. "Readers and advertisers can be assured of the continued high quality and solid integrity of First Alaskans Magazine in their hands."
All ANI publications have now been sold. On Aug. 2, Calista announced the sale of The Cordova Times to newspaper editor and Cordova resident Jennifer Gibbins.
On Aug. 5, Calista announced that the husband and wife team of Jason Evans and Kiana Peacock had purchased the Arctic Sounder, the Dutch Harbor Fisherman and The Bristol Bay Times. Evans was born and raised in Nome, while Peacock was born and raised in Kotzebue.
On Aug. 17, Calista announced that Edgar Blatchford, who founded ANI with Calista 19 years ago, had purchased the Seward Phoenix Log and The Tundra Drums.
