The goal of this free event, in which everyone is welcome to participate, is to promote exercise and healthy lifestyles.

Each person who walks will receive a fresh orange and a free t-shirt designed by Brenda Norbert of Koliganek. Each village picks their own date to walk.

Eight villages already have plans to have their walk in August, one in September and one in October. Chignik Bay and Newhalen have yet to decide on a date in August, but events were scheduled, Aug. 6 in Ugashik, Aug. 11 in New Stuyahok, Aug. 15 at Ekwok, Aug. 19 at Chignik Lagoon, Aug. 20 at Iliamna, and Nondalton Aug. 20 or Aug. 21.

Naknek/King Salmon will have a walk in September and Togiak in October.

Specific dates are defined by each village coordinator.

Some dates may be changed due to weather. Please look for flyers for the 5th Annual Bristol Bay walk coming to your village!

Bristol Bay Area Health Corp. has coordinators in most villages of the Bristol Bay region, with the exception of Aleknagik, Kokhanok, Manokotak, Nondalton, Pedro Bay, Perryville, Port Heiden, Platinum, South Naknek and Twin Hills.

Anyone who would like to coordinate this event in the above villages should notify the Diabetes Prevention Program at Bristol Bay Area Health Corp.

Physical activity has many benefits including prevention of type 2 diabetes, decreased blood pressure, improved blood sugar levels, reduced cholesterol levels and raised HDL, the "good" cholesterol that helps prevent heart disease. Exercise also improves sleep, helps fight depression and promotes weight loss.

At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity is recommended each week for adults. This includes taking walks with the family, riding your bicycle, or participating in Open Gym in your village.

Children over the age of 6 and adolescents should have at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity. Physical Education at school, walking to and from school, participating in open gym, playing basketball, or riding a bicycle are just some ideas to keep active.
