Southwest School District, NEA reach agreementPublished on March 4th, 2010 By BRISTOL BAY TIMES STAFF A tentative agreement for a new teacher contract was reached on Friday, Feb. 26, between Southwest Region School District and the local NEA chapter. If ratified by the board and membership, it will become official at the end of March. Negotiations began with an exchange of positions on Feb. 19. The contract includes professional teachers in the eight public schools located in Aleknagek, Clark's Point, Ekwok, Koliganek, Manokotak, New Stuyohok, Togiak and Twin Hills. The new contract covers the three school years from 2010-2013. Major points in the tentative contract include the following: A new $10,000 annual fund for tuition reimbursement. No restriction will be placed on using tuition reimbursement funds for salary advancement. Minimal rent increases for district-provided housing. Typically, the increase would be $20 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. The provision for a $500 pet deposit has been eliminated. Better health insurance under Premera/Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska. Salary increases of 2 percent for 2010-2011, 2 percent for 2011-2012, and 3 percent for 2012-2013. Representing Southwest Region School District in the contract negotiations were Superintendent Jack Foster, Lee Ann Andrew, director of administrative services, and school board member LeRoy Fox of Togiak. Representing the local chapter of NEA were Kirk Kofford, former chapter president of Manokotak; Kyle Casper, chapter treasurer of New Stuyohok; and Dale Richesin, chapter president of Togiak. Before the tentative agreement becomes official, it must be reviewed by legal counsel, and ratified by the Southwest Region School Board and by a vote of the union membership. Such ratification is expected by the end of March 2010. Bristol Bay Times Staff can be reached at editor@thebristolbaytimes.com |
