Klein sparks Pacific Lutheran victoryPublished on January 14th, 2010 By VAN WILLIAMS In high school, Zachary Klein enjoyed double-figure scoring sprees on the basketball court with regularity. In college, however, they have been far and few between. So is the life of an underclassman. But all that changed last week when Klein broke out. The 6-foot-1 sophomore guard from Naknek came off the bench on Jan. 3 to deliver a career-high 15 points in a career-high 18 minutes to lead Pacific Lutheran University to a 67-64 road win over Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. Klein sank 4 of 6 field goals, including all 3-pointers, and made 4 of 6 free throws, most of which came in the second half when the Lutes rallied for the victory. It's only the sixth game Klein has played in since arriving at PLU in the fall of 2007. The Alaskan's fingerprints were all over last week's conference win. He ignited an 11-2 run late in the first half and drained a 3-pointer to give PLU a 36-35 advantage early in the second half. Klein is no stranger to success. At Bristol Bay High School, he was voted Class 2A Boys Player of the Year by the media and finished second at the state wrestling championships. The next year he transferred to Mt. Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school in Sitka, where he earned second-team all-state honors in basketball and won a state title in wrestling. Now it appears Klein is finding his niche in college basketball. Van Williams can be reached at vwilliams@alaskanewspapers.com, or by phone at 907-348-2452 or 800-770-9830, ext. 452 |
